SHAH ALAM: A toilet break by a student saved the others from injuries after a fire destroyed their dormitory at the Ihya Ul-Quran Tahfiz Academy at Kampung Bukit Lanchung here.

There was no casualty in the 8pm incident on Sunday (Oct 22) as 13 of the 17 live-in students were on the ground floor while four others were attending other activities.

One of the students said they were attending a recital class on the ground floor when the fire broke out in the dormitory located on the first floor of the school.

"One of us had gone to the toilet while we were reciting the Quran and he smelt something burning. He saw bright lights coming from the first floor.

"He quickly alerted everyone in the class and several of us went to check and found out that our dormitory was on fire.

"Our teacher told us to go outside before he alerted the firemen," student Muhammad Farhan Muzabfar, 14, said at the scene.

The fire could have started due to an incident hours earlier when a pillow caught fire from mosquito coils.

In that incident, the academy’s warden, Mohd Khairul Ni'mat Doll Kawaid, said he was alerted by his students of the fire and they managed to put it out by spraying water on the pillow.

"However, it was possible that embers from the fire could have landed in other areas of the hall undetected and which later re-ignited," he said.

Mohd Khairul Ni'mat said the school, which has 20 male students aged between nine and 17, was among the tahfiz schools which were inspected by the Fire and Rescue Department nationwide following the Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah tahfiz fire that left 23 dead in Kuala Lumpur in September.

"We installed fire extinguishers and also recently renovated the two-storey premises with an emergency staircase as was recommended," he said.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Mohd Sani Harul said 14 firemen were at the scene in two fire engines after receiving a distress call at 8.28pm.

He said they managed to control the blaze from spreading to nearby village houses.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

JASIN - Kegilaan seorang remaja berusia 13 tahun terhadap air minuman bergas sejak kecil akhirnya memberi kesan buruk apabila dia kini mengidap penyakit kencing manis kronik.

Remaja berkenaan, Mahathir Mohammad berkata, penderitaan itu dialaminya sejak lima tahun lalu sehinggakan dia  terpaksa melupakan alam persekolahan apatah lagi menduduki Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR).

"Saya suka minum minuman bergas sejak kecil. Lebih- lebih lagi dulu ada sebuah kedai runcit berdekatan rumah, jadi memang setiap hari saya akan beli air bergas. Tapi tak sangka akhirnya membuatkan saya jadi begini.

"Memang pada mulanya ia hanya luka kecil di tapak kaki tapi kaki semakin membengkak dan bernanah malah akan mengeluarkan bau yang busuk," katanya ketika ditemui di rumahnya di Taman Rimbunan Kasih, Serkam di sini.

Sementara itu, ibunya Zaliha Mohd Zabidi, 44, berkata ketika usia Mahathir 12 tahun kedua-dua kaki anak keempat daripada lima beradik itu hampir dipotong oleh doktor bagi mengelakkan terkena jangkitan kuman.

"Memang ketika dapatkan rawatan doktor cadang untuk potong, akan tetapi setelah berfikir panjang saya tak sampai hati mahu melihat anak yang dilahirkan normal akhirnya kehilangan kaki.

"Kemudian saya ambil keputusan dan berikhtiar pelbagai cara untuk sembuhkan dia. Alhamdulillah, akhirnya saya berjumpa seorang doktor yang terbaik dan sehingga kini Mahathir masih melakukan rawatan susulan dengannya," katanya.

Menurutnya yang bekerja sebagai pekebun, bagaimanapun kini pergerakan anaknya itu terbatas berikutan kawasan luka yang sentiasa berair dan hanya mampu mengengsot di dalam rumah.

"Jika ada urusan di luar ataupun mahu membawanya ke klinik, dia terpaksa menggunakan kerusi roda ataupun menggunakan kasut khas yang ditempah.

"Saya mahu melihat Mahathir sembuh dan dapat bersekolah seperti kawan-kawannya yang lain. Kalau ditakdirkan saya pergi dahulu dengan keadaan dia seperti itu?. Memang itu sahajalah yang saya sering fikirkan," katanya.

The Dangers of Third Hand Smoke

Even when a smoker has stopped puffing away, the furniture nearby may still be.

Studies show that these residual chemicals, byproducts of cigarette smoke, can cling to hair, skin, clothes, furniture, drapes, walls, and carpets. They linger long after the smoker has left the area. Residue can also linger on interior car surfaces. This can also be a problem in hotels that allow smoking on some floors. The residue also typically builds up on these surfaces over time.

A large study of more than 95,000 cases presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies in 2016 shows that a quarter of American children lived with smokers, and these children had significantly higher doctor and hospital visits, as well as increased rates of infections, asthma flare-ups and other respiratory events, compared to children living in households with no smokers.

What is third-hand smoke?Exposure to tobacco doesn’t just mean being in the direct presence of a smoker or being in an environment right after someone has smoked. There is also a phenomenon called third-hand smoke. Third-hand smoke is exposure to the residuals of nicotine and other chemicals left on surfaces by smoke.

This thirdhand smoke residue resists normal cleaning and cannot be eliminated simply by airing rooms, opening windows, vacuuming, or using fans.

What kind of danger does this chemical residue pose?

Many studies assess Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) in this third-hand residual form. It appears that the danger posed is actually from the transformation that takes place once the residue is present. The residue from nicotine and its breakdown products can recombine and form carcinogens called nitrosamines.
